Chelsea Reilly, aged 16 from Irvine, has been volunteering in her local community primary school working with autistic children and clocking up 35 hours a week since the summer of 2012. This is all the more remarkable when you consider that the teenager lives in one of North Ayrshire’s residential units and is looked after by the local authority.
Supporting the children, she arranges activities and trips but works closely with them to improve their communication skills through play and art therapy.
Through her volunteering work she has gained many skills and as a result her confidence and self esteem has improved. She has been successful in obtaining a modern apprenticeship in social care and is working towards completing a SVQ level 2 in social care.
