The Clark Community Choir, based in East Lothian, have seen young people successfully engaging with their community and challenging negative stereotypes that exist about them. The choir is for anyone of any age, background or ability who enjoys singing. People of all ages are involved in the choir and the atmosphere of mutual respect is a strong reminder of what can be achieved when intergenerational groups work together.
The choir is a success story of what can be achieved when young people are given the chance to contribute to their community. Choir, member Janice Burr said, “The perception of young people is often wrong, you only hear about the negative things that the minority do. The young people in the choir have shown everyone that they are not like that. I’m sure their involvement has helped to challenge views that some may have had about young people.”
We caught up with the choir to find out more about the work they are doing to break down barriers between the generations and also to see how the young members have been challenging negative perceptions that exist about them.
